Artist statement #2

happyface202101

I originally planned on having my project be an audio soundscape of a person exploring a collapsed city/town, where sounds of the past kept leaking through into the present. The limited number of sounds that I had access to made this surprisingly difficult, and I ended up using far fewer filters than I thought I would—there ended up not being that many places where I thought having a super distorted sound was fitting.

The combination of my limited sounds with the ones I knew I had all being useful for a horror soundscape led to me slowly turning my project from a curious exploration into me leaning fully into a more abstract horror theme. I added pounding sounds at a door that the protagonist passes, and that addition ended up informing how I wanted the rest of the project to sound.

I think overall, this project was more successful than the last in conveying what I wanted it to. The last project was too ambitious in the things I wanted it to convey, and, to be frank, this one was as well, but I think I was at least more successful in conveying the things I wanted to than before. My last project’s theme backfired in some sense, so this project having at least conveyed the correct emotions is a step up from before. For my next project, I hope to pick a less ambitious idea that will be much easier to execute while still being a lot of fun.
